Home Lenders take a beating due to increase in defaults

We've been hearing about it forever, as far as the bubble bursting, and different parts of the market taking a beating. Many have feared repercussions from the way the mortgage industry seemingly was bending about every lending rule and handing out loans of every manner about to anyone who could sign up for it.

People have been talking about overinflated markets for a while. Is this a trend or will there be slowdown and any time for wages or cost to catch up to what some people see as astronomical prices for Real Estate. Oddly even with the supposed bubble bursting, many areas really aren't seeing that much of a slow down like some predicted.

Scam No. 1: The bailout, aka 'equity stripping'
As the Calvagnos' case shows, this scam is particularly ingenious -- and humiliating for the victim. In theory, a person or company could help a homeowner keep his house via a process in which the homeowner sells the house very cheaply to them while the homeowner gets his finances in order. The new owner pays the mortgage, and the old homeowner pays to live in the home in the meantime, buying back the home (with interest) in a fixed amount of time. If the financial setbacks are temporary, and the company is above-board, everybody can win: The homeowner keeps the house and the company earns a profit for its role as rescuer.

This law would prevent discount real estate brokers from offering limited service for much less than the traditional 6% commission; state governor opposes the bill.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has come out against a state bill that would make Michigan the tenth state to outlaw discounted, no-frills real estate brokerages, Fortune has learned.
